Porcelain Paving UK: Formats, Packs and Buying Checks

Quick answer

Choose outdoor porcelain paving by the exact product specification, not by the word porcelain alone. Compare the listed format, surface design, pack contents, selling coverage, sample option and your installation requirements. Then check delivery access and confirm any uncertain technical detail before ordering.

Start with the finished patio, not the product name

Porcelain paving is manufactured, so its colour and pattern are more controlled than quarried natural stone. That does not make every porcelain product interchangeable. A light grey stone-effect slab, a dark concrete-effect design and a warm limestone-effect print will respond differently to brickwork, planting, fencing and outdoor lighting.

Begin with the setting. Note the colour of the house brick or render, the doors opening onto the patio, nearby paths, and whether the area is enclosed or open. Use those fixed features to narrow the palette before comparing individual product photographs. Where a sample is listed, it can help you assess the surface in the actual light, but a small sample cannot show every variation in print or shade.

Browse the porcelain paving collection and open each shortlisted product rather than relying on the collection card alone. The product page contains the current format, pack choices, stock status and sample option.

Compare 600 x 600 mm and 900 x 600 mm formats

Square and rectangular slabs create different joint patterns and cutting requirements. A 600 x 600 mm format can suit more compact layouts; a 900 x 600 mm format changes the proportions of the main field and the number of joints visible across the patio. Neither format is automatically better for every site.

For square formats, compare current listings such as County Light Grey 600 x 600 mm, Cream Monolith 600 x 600 mm and Quartz White 600 x 600 mm. Their designs and available packs differ.

For rectangular grey designs, compare Kandla Grey 900 x 600 mm, County Light Grey 900 x 600 mm, Station Grey 900 x 600 mm, Crossover Grey 900 x 600 mm and Hammerstone Grey 900 x 600 mm. For darker or warmer designs, compare County Anthracite, Hammerstone Beige and Sinai Pearl limestone-effect porcelain.

Measure the area and discuss borders, steps, drainage and cuts with your installer before selecting a format. Our paving quantity calculator can help compare a measured area and planning allowance once the chosen option's selling coverage has been confirmed.

Read the listing as a set of checks

The product title identifies the range and listed format, but the buying decision should use the complete listing. Record these details for each product you shortlist:

  • The exact slab dimensions and stated thickness.
  • The visible surface design, edge detail and finish description.
  • The selected pack's contents, published coverage and selling unit.
  • Whether the selected option is a full pack, split pack, single item or sample.
  • The current stock status and available sample option.
  • Any specification that remains unconfirmed or differs between the title, option text and product fields.

A sample labelled for one product does not represent another format or material. Check the sample's own option and SKU on the product page. Our sample selection guide explains how to use a small piece without treating it as a miniature patio.

Do not infer performance from appearance

The words outdoor, porcelain, 20 mm or stone effect do not by themselves establish slip performance, load capacity, frost behaviour or suitability for steps and driveways. Those details belong to the exact product and its intended construction. If the planned area has a specific requirement, ask for the relevant technical information and have the installer confirm that the product and build-up are suitable.

This is especially important around steps, changes in level, sloping paths and areas subject to vehicle use. Do not transfer a specification from a similar-looking product or from a general porcelain description.

Calculate from the selected pack, not the headline unit price

A price per square metre is useful only when the compared options use the same selling unit and confirmed coverage. Samples should stay outside that calculation. If a listing states both a piece count and an area, check that they reconcile. Where they do not, ask us to confirm the supplied coverage before using the figure to choose a quantity.

Our pack sizes and price-per-square-metre guide shows how to compare full packs, split packs and samples without mixing selling units. The project list can keep two exact product options, quantity assumptions and current price checks together while you compare them.

Plan the installation products with the paving

Porcelain paving is one part of the completed construction. Ask your installer to confirm the sub-base, drainage, bedding method, primer, jointing material and edge details. A product used in the wrong system can create a problem even when the slab itself is suitable.

Compare the listed installation products by stage rather than choosing a familiar pack. Joint-It Simple jointing compound and slurry primer perform different roles. Check the manufacturer's instructions for the chosen materials, joint dimensions, weather conditions and compatibility with the selected paving.

Check access and delivery before scheduling work

Paving packs and pallets need a practical delivery route and a safe unloading point. Prepare the delivery postcode, approximate quantity, access restrictions and any steps or narrow passages. Read our delivery and returns information and use the checks on Before you order before arranging installation labour.

Delivery cost and timing are not established by the product title alone. Confirm the arrangements for your postcode and selected quantity before treating an online estimate as the final project cost.

Common questions

Is every porcelain slab suitable for outdoors?

No. Check the exact product's stated application, technical information and installation requirements. Do not choose an indoor tile by appearance alone.

Which is better, 600 x 600 mm or 900 x 600 mm?

Neither is better in every setting. Compare the proportions of the space, the proposed laying pattern, cutting requirements, pack choices and the appearance you want.

Can I compare porcelain with Indian sandstone?

Yes, but compare exact listings rather than material labels. Our Indian sandstone and porcelain comparison explains the checks.

What should I do if dimensions or coverage appear to conflict?

Do not average the figures or choose one silently. Keep the conflict visible and ask us to confirm the supplied quantity and selling coverage before ordering.
