Choosing paving samples: colour, finish and format

Choosing paving involves more than finding a colour on a screen. A sample, where offered, can help compare the surface and tone in the intended setting. Use it alongside the full product information and photographs.

Start with the surrounding materials

Compare the proposed paving with the brickwork, exterior doors, boundaries and planting. Look at the sample in more than one position and at different times of day. The aim is to judge the relationship between the materials rather than matching a single photograph exactly.

Compare the finish as well as the shade

The catalogue includes different listed finishes, such as riven, smooth or honed natural stone and matt porcelain. Read the exact finish and edge treatment on the product. A similar colour name does not establish that two products have the same texture, edge detail or intended use.

Remember the limits of a small sample

A sample can show a small part of the product's appearance. It cannot show the whole layout or every variation in a natural stone pack. Review the full product photographs, slab formats and any stated variation before making the final choice.

Move from the sample to the full-size specification

  • Check the main slab dimensions and thickness.
  • Compare a single format with any mixed-size patio pack.
  • Read the selected option's coverage, quantity and reference code.
  • Confirm the product's suitability and installation requirements for the proposed area.

Keep material comparisons in the right category

Explore porcelain paving, Indian sandstone and sandstone paving, limestone and granite separately, then use the material-specific buying guides to narrow the options.

For quantity planning, read paving pack sizes and price per square metre. If a finish or dimension is unclear, send the product name and your proposed use through our project enquiry form.
